Tuesday: Links with family

Story of the day

Kyle Wilson named to Nagurski watch list [WAC Sports.com]

Who needs Orlando Scandrick? The future Dallas Cowboys star bolted the Broncos for NFL riches after his junior year, leaving room for junior Kyle Wilson to fill his shoes. The media thinks that shouldn't be a problem.
The Football Writers Association of America has announced the Watch List for the 2008 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is awarded to the best defensive player in college football and sponsored by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. Four WAC players made the list: Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State; Solomon Elimimian, LB, Hawai‘i; Antonio Baker, DB, Louisiana Tech; and D'Anthony Smith, DT, Louisiana Tech.
By the end of the year, we fully expect Ryan Winterswyk, Derrell Acrey, and Jeron Johnson to join the list.

OBNUG Roster Update: Cornerbacks

Spring football gets OBNUG in the mood to speculate, so over the next few weeks, we will be making blind guesses as to who will be starting for the Broncos in the fall. We’ll do it position-by-position. Today: Cornerbacks.

Cornerbacks

Ideal candidate: a young Deion Sanders

Worst candidate: Jabba the Hutt

Actual candidates
: Kyle Wilson, Garcia Day, Brandyn Thompson, Keith McGowen, Antwon Murray

OBNUG's pick: Wilson, Thompson. Obviously, Kyle Wilson is a shoe-in for one corner position, and we feel that Thompson will make good on the promise he showed last year and earn the other spot. We were expecting big things from Garcia Day this season, and we could still see him make an impact as a nickel back.

Kyle Wilson out of spring practice

The Idaho Statesman is reporting that Kyle Wilson will miss spring practice due to a knee injury. With Orlando Scandrick gone to the NFL, the Broncos will be without both of their starting cornerbacks from last year for the spring.

While Wilson's injury is not expected to be serious, linebacker David Shields is still a question mark to return next season after shoulder surgery. Fortunatley, the team is stacked at linebacker, but having a veteran presence like Shields would be helpful.

BSU players are smart AND good

Sixteen Bronco players were named to the WAC all-academic team this week. Now we know what was distracting everyone at the Hawaii Bowl! Here is the list from the Idaho Statesman:

Football - Josh Bean, Jeff Biedermann, Tim Brady, Richie Brockel, Jeff Cavender, Pete Cavender, Dallas Dobbs, Kyle Gingg, Michael Lose, Jeff Lowe, Chris O'Neill, Orlando Scandrick, Nick Schlekeway, Austin Smith, Taylor Tharp and Kyle Wilson.

It appears Jeremy Childs did not qualify.
