Week two of the NFL preseason is here. Time for the starters to put in a full quarter-and-a-half of work!
Former Boise State player Kimo von Oelhoffen did not make it out of week one, getting cut by the Philadelphia Eagles for having old knees. Who's going to tell stories about the 1970's at team dinner? Andy Reid made a big mistake.
Here are the best Bronco-related games of the weekend:
Tonight:
Oakland at Tennessee, 6:00pm, FOX
Chris Carr seeks revenge against his old team by returning the opening kickoff, playing a few downs on defense, and taking a nap on the bench for the third and fourth quarters.
Saturday:
Dallas at Denver, 7:00pm
Orlando Scandrick was impressive in his Cowboys' debut. Ryan Clady was not in his first start for Denver. Needless to say that Woody Paige will be watching with bated breath.
Green Bay at San Francisco, 7:00pm
Korey Hall and Daryn Colledge continue their futile quest to boost Aaron Rodgers' confidence and make him feel like the team is much better off with him rather than Brett Favre.
Chicago at Seattle, 7:00pm
Seahawks TE Jeb Putzier is battling for playing time at tight end. Fortunately, the good Bears linebackers will be on the field far less than the bad Bears linebackers.
The latest version of Madden was released on Tuesday, much to the dismay of our social calendar. Seriously, between Boise State football and video games, we're booked for the next few months.
While each year brings new features to the game (Cris Collinsworth, anyone?), the updated rosters get people talking just as much as anything else. An 85 overall rating for Matt Leinart? Please. At least it appears that the Madden folks have the numbers right for Boise State's two newest NFL stars.
Ryan Clady
Overall: 79
Morale: 95
Acceleration: 85
Strength: 87
Runblock: 80
Passblock: 88
Orlando Scandrick
Overall: 73
Speed: 97
Acceleration: 97
Awareness: 42
Man coverage: 79
Zone coverage: 78
Madden lists Clady's catching ability as a 45. They must not have seen the Idaho game.
In NFL preseason games over the weekend, several former Boise State players saw action, much to Woody Paige's chagrin.
First round pick Ryan Clady had a harsh introduction to the NFL against the Mario Williams and the Houston Texans. From the Denver Post (via Scott Slant), here is Woody Paige's take on Clady's performance. Note: we do not place much credence in anything Woody Paige has ever said.
"Ryan Clady, the No. 1 pick, became the first Broncos' rookie to start the opening exhibition at left tackle, and he looked every bit of it. Clady played the entire first half and was flattened like a dry-cleaned starched shirt in the beginning, and often. He was overmatched against Texans defensive end Mario Williams (the former No. 1 pick overall). He will need help."
Well, we're sure Boise State would take him back if that would help matters any.
The Post's game recap was a little more balanced in its perspective of the Clady/Williams matchup, which probably just goes to show that Woody Paige does not know how to objectively watch football.
Left tackle Ryan Clady got a rookie baptism from the Texans' star defensive end, Mario Williams. There were times when Williams knocked Clady back into his own backfield, but the Broncos' first-round draft choice did compete and gave Cutler time to throw on the touchdown drive.
Fortunately, other Boise State alumni had better luck than Clady, especially Orlando Scandrick and Jeb Putzier. Scandrick had three tackles, one sack, and two kickoff returns in a Cowboys loss. Putzier caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Seneca Wallace in a Seahawks win.
Tonight, ESPN will have Korey Hall, Daryn Colledge, and the Packers...oh, and enough Brett Favre news to choke a horse. Let's hope the scrimmage runs long.
There are plenty of Boise State players on NFL rosters this offseason (see our list for AFC and NFC), so there are plenty of reasons to cozy up to Rich Eisen and the NFL Network all weekend. Gerald Alexander and the Lions played last night (Alexander had one tackle), and there is a full slate of games over the next few days. Here are the top games to watch.
Cowboys vs. Chargers, Sunday 8:00pm
Romo vs. Rivers. Tomlinson vs. Ware. Owens vs. Cromartie. Scandrick vs. Naanee? You can forget those first three matchups. It is preseason, remember? The Scandrick-Naanee battle will be the fun one to watch. Both former Boise State standouts should see significant playing time in this first preseason game, and there is a good chance that they might line up across from one another. Who will get the better of whom? Will they chat about the Boise Fanci Freez? Will the Hard Knocks cameras pick up on this?
Broncos vs. Texans, Sunday 6:00pm
Ryan Clady will get his first taste of NFL action against Mario Williams and a whole bunch of Mario Williams' back-ups.
Cincinnati vs. Green Bay, Monday 6:00pm, ESPN
Do you think the ESPN crew will talk much about Brett Favre? Only all the time! Try to cut through the Favre love shower to get your eye on Daryn Colledge and Korey Hall. The two former Bronco stars will still give you a reason to watch the Packer offense even though it does include more Aaron Rodgers than you might want.
49ers vs. Raiders, Saturday 8:00pm
Drisan James (Oakland) and Jerard Rabb (San Fran) are both battling for roster spots on their respective teams, and they'll need to make their mark early in the preseason to earn their shot. How about a re-creation of the Fiesta Bowl hook-and-ladder? We doubt Jared Zabransky is busy.
Former Boise State CB Orlando Scandrick has his work cut out for him if he wants to be in the Cowboys' secondary come opening week. As such, O.S. is taking a slightly different approach to things than usual.
(Scandrick) admitted that he could have been "a little more humble" in college. His approach was much different during his first Cowboys minicamp, when veterans such as Anthony Henry said they were impressed as much by his attitude as they were by his speed.
From what we hear, Scandrick has been very impressive in his time with Dallas. The Cowboys have one of the deeper secondaries in the league, but we would be surprised if Scandrick doesn't find somewhere to contribute, whether it be in dime packages or on special teams.
The story also gives some insight into why Scandrick may have fallen into the fifth round despite Mel Kiper's second round projection.
Scandrick can think of only one reason for the dropoff: a vague reference to "major character concerns" on his NFL.com draft profile.
Interesting. We had no idea Robb Akey had access to NFL.com draft profiles.
SEC talks about early recruiting season [Dave's Blog]
The SEC wants an early signing day, and what the SEC wants, the SEC gets. From ESPN.com:
The coaches voted by a 9-3 count Wednesday at the SEC spring meetings to add an early signing day in late November. This 24-hour period for prospects to sign early would fall on the Monday before the contact period begins, which during a normal year would come during the week of Thanksgiving.
The measure now moves on for approval by the conference's athletic directors and presidents before being sponsored on a national level. Why not fix the BCS while you're at it, SEC?

The rave reviews on former Boise State CB Orlando Scandrick in the Dallas Cowboys' minicamp continue to flood in. This time, FOX Sports' John Czarnecki tells us that Scandrick was the best rookie corner in camp.
Scandrick, a fifth-round pick from Boise State, out-played Mike Jenkins in a recent mini-camp.
Jenkins was a first-round pick by the Cowboys. Maybe now the local media will stop asking Scandrick if he regrets turning pro early.

We found this story interesting not only because it provides a handy guide to some potentially exciting players, but it also has a level-headed, sensible approach to the preseason WAC race.
After a quiet year in 2007 expect Johnson and Boise State to make another run in the WAC, where the departure of Colt Brennan and June Jones at Hawaii has suddenly left the conference wide open.
It sure is nice not having someone hand the title to Fresno State right away.

Welcome, Bronco fans, to OBNUG's NFL Draft live-blog. I'm Kevan, and I'll be taking you through today's picks. First, there are a few things you should know about me before we begin.
I am a die-hard Patriots fan.
I may fall asleep during some point of the first round.
I cannot stand Chris Berman.
Stuart Scott interviews make my head hurt.
I think Clady will fall to the Ravens.
I'll drag this live-blog on long enough to see Ryan Clady get drafted. No promises after that.
Enjoy.
12:45 Coverage starts in a few minutes. I could not be more excited! Word is that the Rams are going to take Chris Long from Virginia with the number two pick, rather than LSU's Glenn Dorsey. Here's what I don't get: Dorsey was the consensus number one throughout the college football season. Now, he will be, at best, the third pick? I think the three months before the Draft gives teams the opportunity to overthink their picks. Remember Adrian Peterson last year? Yeah, exactly. I'll get off my soapbox now...but only because my Pop-Tarts are ready. 12:57 Sure hope Miami doesn't use their whole ten minutes to make their pick. 12:59 Will Jake Long's nose get its own signing bonus? 1:01 Tacky suit update: Keyshawn Johnson is in the lead. 1:03 We are under way! The Dolphins waste no time in selecting long, and ESPN wastes no time in jumping to commercial. Seriously?! A commercial break 45 seconds into the NFL Draft?! I could not find the NFL Network fast enough. 1:05 I still cannot get over the size of Jake Long's nose. It is Jim Halpert big! 1:07 Am I the only one expecting to see Teri Hatcher in the Chris/Howie Long family? She is nowhere to be seen. Suzy Kolber, get on this! 1:11 Clady's picture has popped up along the side of the ESPN broadcast with the Boise State logo. That is some serious exposure that we aren't used to having. It is pretty cool.
#2: Chris Long to the Rams.
1:14 NFL Network's Deion Sanders seems to be getting exclusive interviews with the draftees. This could provide some great unintentional comedy. We'll keep tuned. 1:16 Adam Schefter just reported Matt Ryan to the Falcons. Ugh. 1:17 The Chiefs will have either Gholston or Dorsey to choose between when they pick at No. 5. If they truly want a defensive lineman over Clady, then they will have their opportunity.
#3: Matt Ryan to the Falcons.
1:18 Now might be a good time to point out that I’m wearing my Tim Couch jersey. 1:25 OK, couple of things. First of all, Matt Ryan is wearing a sweater vest. Bad choice. Second, I'm pretty sure good teams don't draft quarterbacks this high any more. Third, will the Raiders be able to resist McFadden? Fourth, please God let Dorsey fall to the Patriots.
#4: Darren McFadden to the Raiders
1:29 Interesting, Oakland. I wonder how much Adrian Peterson had to do with this pick. He fell last year and was the best rookie in the league; McFadden can do the same thing. 1:31 Whoa, McFadden's family is rushing the stage! Way to represent. 1:32 The Chiefs are the first team that experts thought Clady might go to, but with the way the draft has gone, I don't see him going here. The real question is who might trade up to get Dorsey or Gholston?
#5: Glenn Dorsey to the Chiefs
1:37 The Jets are on the clock. Care for a re-do on D'Brickshaw Ferguson? 1:38 Clady prospect update: the Patriots? You have to think that Gholston will go to the Jets, and the Patriots always love their value picks. Clady could go No. 7.
#6: Vernon Gholston to the Jets (that's a picture of Mike Mamula, by the way)
1:44 And the green room just went 6-for-6! Gholston is one of those workout warriors who didn't have a stellar career, but does have stellar muscles. I believe Chris Mortensen just referred to him as having a "Tarzan body." Reaching for defensive linemen in the first round reminds me of this:
1:47 There doesn't seem to be a camera at Clady's draft party. On the other hand, we did get to see Branden Albert's wardrobe sponsored by American Eagle. 1:49 ESPN could have gone without mentioning the Patriot's Super Bowl loss. Jerks. 1:50 Yes! Patriots trade their pick! I love this team!
#7: Sedrick Ellis to the Saints
1:55 Ryan Clady is Mel's best available and Jacksonville just moved up. Could this be it?
1:56 I'm about to get my Cheetos on.
1:58 DeSean Jackson cam. That might be there all day.
#8: Derrick Harvey to the Jaguars
2:02 I guess Clady will be going to Denver at #12 now, unless some more trades keep coming. That will be a good fit. Let's just hope he doesn't fall even further.
2:05 Does Chris Berman even know how football works? His take on Derrick Harvey to the Jaguars was how exciting it will be when the Jags face the Ravens in Week 17 because it will be Harvey versus Troy Smith in a rematch of the 2007 BCS championship.
I sure hope Clady goes soon.
#9: Keith Rivers to the Bengals
2:09 Would it have killed Rivers to wear something with a collar today?
2:11 Alright, Patriots back on the clock! I could get used to this...unless ESPN uses it as an excuse to show more Super Bowl highlights.
#10: Jerod Mayo to the Patriots
2:15 A linebacker who runs a 4.54? There's something the Patriots sure don't have.
2:16 Berman just made a terrible Mayo pun. I am so done with ESPN right now.
#11: Leodis McKelvin to the Bills
2:20 Is it Ryan Clady time? I can feel it!
2:21 Where is Todd McShay during all of this? Sitting in his living room having pretend arguments with Mel Kiper? First Teri Hatcher, now this. What are those journalists doing?
2:23 Clady getting love on NFL Network right now.
#12: Ryan Clady to the Broncos
2:25 Clady to the Broncos! Excellent. He'll be a great fit there. Denver has some of the best o-line coaches in the league, and he will have every opportunity to succeed.
2:28 The Boise media will eat up the "once a Bronco, always a Bronco" line. We'll go ahead and put the over-under on that phrase at 15.
The studio coverage of Clady's pick was absoutely terrible. After Mel Kiper did his spiel, Chris Berman changed the topic to Jay Cutler's quarterback skills. Seriously?! What a joke of a broadcast. Mort finally brought things back together after Keyshawn and Steve Young yukked it up about Cutler for awhile.
I caught the end of the NFL Network coverage, and they were showing how Clady blew several blocks in the Hawaii game. They were kind of tearing him apart.
Also, no one had a camera at Clady's party. Hopefully David Augusto will come through for us tonight on KTVB News at 10.
That does it for OBNUG's NFL Draft live-blog. My personal highlights: Roger Goodell's opening fistpump, Matt Ryan being a complete waste, the Patriots trading down, and Clady going to a solid team. Lowlights: every time Chris Berman opened his mouth.
We'll try to post video this weekend of the Clady pick, and we'll break things down for you next week. Feel free to keep the conversation going in the comments section, especially now that the Lions have a chance to reach for a wide receiver.
To help NFL teams with their drafting needs, we have provided the following scouting reports for Boise State players who might hear their names called in this weekend's NFL Draft. Granted, we are not professional scouts, so our opinions might not carry much credence or value. Also hurting our cause? Intense non-objectivity. Oh well. Here goes nothing!
Ryan Clady Clady has the potential to be a star at the next level. He can dominate an opponent in a number of different ways: with power, with technique, with Jedi mind tricks.WAC competition did him a disservice because flipping UtahState pancakes is a lot harder than mauling BCS competition.
Clady could stand to add some girth and muscle, but he will always have his quickness and athleticism. The NFL is the perfect place for a prospect like Clady, and he should only get better year after year.
Orlando Scandrick
O.S. is fast, aggressive, and confident—attributes that make him an ideal NFL cornerback. He is a younger, saner version of DeAngelo Hall, and he will be an asset in coverage and in run support.
As a safety, Scandrick showed range and toughness, but his greatest BoiseState season came last year at cornerback.Scandrick’s steady improvement hints at untapped potential, and provided he can overcome cockiness, riskiness, and shirtlessness, he should make a solid pro.
Marty Tadman
All personal biases aside, Tadman is the greatest football player we have ever seen. We’re not sure if this is because we have attended mostly Seattle Seahawks and 2A high school football games or if Tadman is, in fact, God’s gift to secondaries. We’re going with the latter.
Tadman has the intangible qualities that scouting combines and drills can’t measure. He is football smart, like Stephen Hawking is math smart. His ability to always be in the right place at the right time is invaluable, and he is rarely caught out of position.
Weaknesses? Is being too perfect a weakness?
Dan Gore
Gore may become the second BSU lineman to go in the draft thanks to his room to grow both physically and technically. At well over six feet tall, Gore definitely has the height, and a solid NFL weight training program could bulk him up to pro playing weight.Plus, having played defensive line for years, Gore’s O-line prospects are much more limitless than most people realize.
Also, his last name is a type of torture. That can’t hurt his chances.
Tad Miller
NFL teams would be wise to give Miller a long, hard look. He is a powerful, sound blocker who has proven to be a winner over his years on the Bronco O-line. Also, he regularly checks his GMail account and responds to pretty much any interview request (notably, ours).
Nick Schlekeway
An excellent pass rusher is a valued commodity in today’s NFL, and Schlekeway would certainly revitalize a team’s pass rush. During his BSU days, he showed great speed and power off the edge, and he had the ability to make an impact in a game. Bigger and stronger defensive ends may be available on draft day, but there will be no player who matches the amount of consecutive consonants in Schlekeway’s last name.
Jeff Cavender
A key member of the Broncos line over the past few years, Cavender has made his mark as a jack of all trades. He can seamlessly switch between different offensive line positions, playing everything from guard and tackle to center and giant tight end. His maneuverability masks a remarkable talent for always being in the right position with his excellent technique and footwork.
Of course, we could be talking about Pete Cavender right now and not know it.
Taylor Tharp
If third-string quarterbacks were valued as highly as franchise left tackles, Tharp would be a Top Ten pick.He proved at BoiseState that the spotlight is a little much for him, but mop-up duty against third-teamers couldn’t be more up his alley.
He put up great numbers with the Broncos with his quick decision-making, knowledge of the offense, and accurate arm.His sideline tosses lacked urgency, but his deep balls always had enough behind them.
As a bonus, Tharp would make best friends with the kickers.
For as long as we can remember, Mel Kiper Jr. has been the face of the NFL Draft. Or should we say hair? Either way, Kiper's scouting has paved the way for thousands of copycat analysts and has helped make the draft one of the NFL's greatest offseason events (alongside holdouts, the Hall of Fame ceremony, and Trey Wingo). We salute you, Mel Kiper. Keep up the great work and say something nice about Ryan Clady and Orlando Scandrick this weekend.
Here is what we see happening in the coming week.
Ryan Clady will be drafted No. 5 overall by the Kansas City Chiefs, prompting people at Clady's draft party at Taco Bell Arena to go wild.
Orlando Scandrick will be drafted in the fourth round by the New England Patriots, prompting people at Scandrick's draft party at OBNUG headquarters to go wild.
Taylor Tharp will not be drafted. (We know--not a bold prediction, but a prediction nonetheless.)
Week in Review (WIR) feels that OBNUG has raised the bar for other WAC football blogs after this week's scoops on Orlando Scandrick's mood and the Idaho Statesman's misprint. Of course, the bar was pretty low to begin with.
Ryan Clady's pec chooses not to participate in Combine.
Orlando Scandrick made quite a name for himself yesterday at the NFL Combine. By posting the fourth fastest time out of everyone, the former Boise State cornerback should see his stock rise in the April draft. In the meantime, his blazing spring got us thinking: how fast exactly is 4.32 seconds?
Well, we did some research and compiled the following list of things that can happen in 4.32 seconds.
The University of Idaho can fall behind by two touchdowns
Dan Hawkins can change his mind about wanting to coach at BSU
Sean Renfree can make the worst decision of his life
Paul J. Schneider can misidentify three Boise State football players and one coach
Earlier today, OBNUG broke a story on Orlando Scandrick being focused heading into the Combine. The story was attained from research done on Scandrick’s MySpace page, to which we did not have full access since we are not technically friends. Nevertheless, our cutthroat reporting skills and attention to detail led us to the breakthrough the NFL Combine had been waiting for: Orlando Scandrick’s mood, complete with emoticon.
All of this got us thinking: is MySpace a credible source for breaking news? Most certified news programs use actual people or first-hand experience to inform their opinions. Should we really be putting our faith in a system that epitomizes the omg generation?
OBNUG votes yes.
We feel that MySpace is a perfectly reasonable place to find out information, especially from today’s generation. Kids are much more likely to post comments or blogs about their life than they are to tell Paul J. Schneider “what’s the haps.” No BSU athlete is running to Mike Prater to tell him how he did on his macroeconomics test, especially not Jeremy Childs. That kind of information is going to hit the interwebs of MySpace long before it makes its way to the middle-aged dad mouths of Idaho media.
Welcome to the future of reporting, where breaking news is sandwiched between the backdrop of Hello Kitty pics and the aural onslaught of Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back.”
Consider OBNUG resourceful. We’ve gleaned copious amounts of knowledge from Ryan Clady’s profile (of particular note, which shows may or may not be the sh*t), and we never cease to be amazed by Marty Tadman’s page (appropriately set to DC Talk’s “In the Light”).
Taste the revolution, David Augusto. You can have your agents and directors and personal contacts. We’ve got this guy: Of course, one needs to be careful straddling the line of journalistic exposure and personal privacy. We would never share with the world that Ryan Clady, according to his MySpace page, makes less than $30,000 a year. That is his personal business, and we intend to keep it as such.
Likewise, MySpace reporters like ourselves need to know how to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to bogus info. Believe it or not, some people lie on their social networking profiles, so you have to take everything you see with a grain of salt. We at OBNUG realize the potential problems, which is why we have adopted a surefire rule to differentiate between the truth and the lies: Always trust an emoticon. Except the surprised emoticon.
We would welcome the media hordes of Idaho to join us in the evolution of journalism. There is a lot to be learned on the pages of MySpace, even if most of it is written in tweenspeak. If you can’t understand something, go ask your teenage daughter. If you can’t figure out a computer, go cover the Vandals. Enjoy finding out more than you ever thought you’d know about today’s athletes.
Orlando Scandrick might have made himself several millions of dollars with a 4.32 time in the 40-yard dash at today's NFL Combine. His time was good enough for second among all cornerbacks and the fourth-best time overall.
“Today went excellent for me. I did everything I had planned,” Scandrick told the Idaho Statesman from Indianapolis. “I came here and made myself some real money.”
He and Ryan Clady, who did not work out due to an injury, will be at the Boise State Pro Day on March 3rd to work out again in front of NFL scouts.
According to Orlando Scandrick's MySpace page, his mood is listed as focused. OBNUG has confirmed this information with a trusted second source: the emoticon next to Scandrick's mood.
Considering O has already logged on today, we can assume that he is focused on his upcoming Combine drills and not something else.
As the NFL Combine winds down today, former BSU defensive back Orlando Scandrick and the rest of the DBs will get their chance to perform for NFL scouts. Make sure you stretch those pectoral muscles, O.S.!
We had a good time watching the Oscars last night, although we were a little disappointed that there was a complete lack of sports throughout the entire four-plus hours. Couldn't we at least have had Will Ferrell do something in short basketball shorts? We will never understand Hollywood.
Here is what we see happening in the nex
Orlando Scandrick blows everyone away at the Combine on Tuesday, prompting scouts to wonder: "If Scandrick is this good, then Marty Tadman must be great!"
Academy Award voters go see Into the Blue, declare it the finest documentary ever made, and reverse their decision to give the Oscar to some foreign flick instead.
Ryan Clady's disappointing Combine performance will be overshadowed when, at BSU's Pro Day, he runs the 40 in 4.3, drags an airplane across the field with his teeth, deadlifts a live horse, jumps from midfield to the top of the new press box and walks on the Boise River.
